Look Within

I attended the Atlanta Photography Group Open Review last night. As much as enjoy connecting with creative souls and studying their images online, there's something quite magical about looking another photographer in the eye and listening to the thought process behind his/her lens. There's a vulnerability you can't pick up in the form of pixels. I didn't plan to share my work, but in the end, I felt compelled to do so. It feels good to be open. To share. In return I got the advice I needed to hear from a very wise man: Be honest. Don't seek the approval of the viewer to guide your art. Look within.

"Look Within"
the subject
is your transport
to some place
within you
where dwells
a point of light
called
'moment of capture'.
That's the trick, right? Don't worry about the voices and go where your heart leads you... so easy to say... so difficult to follow. I recently had several photos published in a teeny little community paper. I didn't get credit for a couple of them and I thought, whew... nobody will know those were mine. But then I started hearing compliments so I called the paper to ask that they give me credit in the retractions next issue, which they gladly agreed to. That's fine, but the thing is, I shouldn't have made that call AFTER hearing compliments. In my mind, I only imagined the pictures being jeered or laying at the bottom of a bird cage. Insecurity. What a horrible monster.
She may be a "quart low" (blue eyes) but she's running on all cylinders! Great photo.
She is beautiful just like you! Hey, I've browsed through Come Closer, and it looks fabulous. You are my shero!
